AG Condemns WPA Official’s “battle ready” statement; Calls on law enforcement to take action

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall has condemned the statements made by Working People’s Alliance Executive Tacuma Ogunseye about an uprising needing to happen in Guyana.

Nandlall slammed the WPA official’s call for the joint services to be “battle ready”, describing the statements as racist and inciteful.

During a WPA public meeting in Buxton this week, Ogunseye spoke about the current plight of the poor in Guyana and Afro Guyanese under the current government. He accused the PPP administration of using the joint services in the past to “execute africans”.

According to Mr. Nandlall, “this racist incendiary call for public disorder and resistance, positioned as an alternative to the democratic process of Local Government Elections lawfully due, is capable of amounting to several criminal offences, including but not limited to, sedition, seditious libel, inciting riotous behaviour and exciting racial hostility in order to create a breakdown of law and order within the State of Guyana, if not treason”.

According to the Attorney General such inflammatory publications cannot be justified under the rubric of freedom of expression as guaranteed by the Constitution.

Nandlall said persons such as Tacuma Ogunseye are of a bygone era, stuck in a time warp long gone, and which have no place in modern Guyana, and indeed, in any modern democratic society.

“We cannot become complacent and ignore these dangerous threats intended to strike at the foundation of the freedoms we enjoy and the rule of law, which protects us as a civilised nation”.

The Attorney General called on all “right-thinking citizens” to echo their voices against such “perilous rhetoric”.

He also called on the law enforcement agencies to take such action “as they deem necessary”.
