Greenwich Park smash-up claims fifth life

Another victim from last Monday’s smash-up between a sandtruck and a mini-bus at Greenwich Park, East Bank Essequibo has died.

The Guyana Police Force has reported that 71-year-old Tella Parhoo, who sustained multiple injuries in the accident, died on Friday afternoon at the Georgetown Hospital.

She was a passenger in the mini-bus.

The other four persons who died in Monday’s accident were 50-year-old Vernon Prowell, the minibus driver of Bent Street, Wortmanville, and minibus passengers Margaret Kennedy, 72, of Tuschen; Olga Reddy, 57, of Parika; and Elvis Charles, 40, of Ruby, East Bank Essequibo.

The accident occurred at about 9.30 hrs on March 6, 2023, when truck driver Ewart Stewart reportedly pulled to the right of the roadway to avoid hitting a car that made a sudden stop, and slammed into the mini-bus, which was traveling in the opposite diredction.

The 38-year-old truck driver was remanded to jail this week after being slapped with four charges of causing death by dangerous driving. He is now likely to face a fifth charge.
