Two die in East Coast smash up

Two persons lost their lives and several others have been left nursing serious injuries following a smash-up involving a mini-bus at Good Hope on the East Coast of Demerara.

The driver of the route 44 mini-bus, Andrew Albert was pronounced dead at the scene. The other victim was identified as passenger, 38-year-old Annalisa Lachan.

Eyewitnesses said the mini-bus which was heading to the Mahaica area was being driven at a fast rate. It is suspected that the driver lost control and slammed into a canter truck which was parked.

A number of other passengers were badly injured and were helped out of the mini-bus by passersby. However, the bodies of the two who died were trapped and could only be removed after the bus was cut apart by the Fire Service.

Scores of persons gathered at the accident scene and expressed their disbelief, while complaining about the fast rate that many mini-bus drivers along the East Coast route drive their buses at.

A police investigation into the deadly crash has been launched.
