The Ministry of Agriculture has launched an investigation into the alleged smuggling of chicken and eggs at the Guyana Marketing Corporation, which is a state agency that falls under the Ministry of Agriculture.
The Ministry pointed out that the Agriculture Minister, Zulfikar Mustapha, and the Ministry of Agriculture are not involved in the purchase or sale of chicken or eggs.
It said the responsibility for those matters falls under the jurisdiction of the Guyana Marketing Corporation (GMC). The GMC is managed by Teshawna Lall.
The Ministry said in recent weeks, the Agriculture Minister initiated an audit and investigation into certain irregularities and discrepancies within the GMC and assured that the probe is a transparent process to ensure accountability and rectify any administrative lapses.
The Ministry’s statement was triggered by a social media post by political activist Mark Benschop, who raised the issue about the alleged smuggling.
The Ministry is urging members of the public not to be swayed by accusations, but to await the outcome of the official investigations.
According to the Agriculture Ministry, it remains committed to its mandate of serving the people of Guyana and ensuring that all aspects of its operations are transparent and accountable and will continue to work diligently for the benefit of the agricultural sector and the citizens of our country.
The Ministry has not released details of the smuggling allegations that are under probe.
