All parties get clearance for Polling Agents for Election Day

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has approved the appointment of Assistant agents, Polling Agents and Candidates to the poll from the Alliance For Change (AFC), Assembly of Liberty and Prosperity (ALP) and We Invest In Nationhood (WIN) after the four parties made late submissions.

The approval was made at a special meeting of the Commission on Saturday.

The WIN party on Friday complained that it was denied the opportunity to field polling agents to polling stations across the county, over late submissions, blamed GECOM for their late submission.

But the Elections Commission Secretariat said it informed all of the parties of the deadline and some of them missed it.

“As a consequence, written appeals were submitted by the parties to the Commission for consideration. In this regard, a special sitting of a statutory meeting was convened and the requests was approved  in the interest of fairness and transparency to ensure the integrity of the process,” GECOM explained.

GECOM said the Chief Elections Officer has since notified all political parties representatives notifying them of the development and urging them to pursue accreditation of their agents and candidates with the respective Returning Officers.
