Jagdeo urges PPP Polling Day agents to look out for possible voter fraud

Opposition Leader and General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party, Bharrat Jagdeo, believes that there could be attempts today by some voters to vote more than once in the Local Government Elections.

Although there has been no report of any such attempt, Mr. Jadgeo told reporters this morning that he has asked the polling day agents for his party to look out for persons who might possibly attempt to vote more than once.

“What we have asked our polling day agents now is to pay particular attention to people who may have voted before and may attempt to come back in and vote”, he said.

Polling stations have representatives of the various political parties as well as a number of polling day staff from the Guyana Elections Commission.

Once a voter turns up to cast his/her ballot, all of those agents would go to their documents to verify the identify of the voter.

According to the Opposition Leader, his party has polling agents at most polling stations across the country. He said at those stations where there are no PPP agents, moves are afoot to get persons there to observe the conduct of the elections.

There are over 1,600 polling stations across the country in the 80 local authority areas.

He said party leaders have also been asked to look at the numbers that will be revealed when the results are made available to see if those numbers stray away from national averages for the particular polling stations.

Mr. Jagdeo said the PPP will be paying close attention to the elections all across the country on this voting day.

The former President voted this morning at the St. John’s College in Waterloo Street.

He never changed his address during the many Claims and Objections period since he left office seven years ago and therefore still votes at the polling station close to State House, the official residence of the President.
