The Private Sector Commission is calling on employers across the country to release their workers and allow them to go out and cast their ballot on this Local Government Elections Day.
In a statement, the Commission said that in consideration of the importance of the Local Government Elections to Guyana’s democracy, it urges all employers to release their staff so that they may exercise their franchise and cast their votes in these elections.
“The Private Sector Commission also urges all Guyanese to go out and vote for the candidates of their choice. The right to vote is a privilege for which our forefathers fought and paid dearly. Let us not waste their sacrifices”, the statement added.
Some companies have already put systems in place to allow workers to leave at various times to cast their ballots, while other companies intend to close early today to allow the employees to vote.
Polling stations across the country opened their doors this morning at 6 o’ clock and those polling stations will remain open until 6pm today.
There are over 1600 polling stations that have been set up in the 80 local authority areas across the country.
The Guyana Elections Commission has said that all systems are in place for a smooth voting day.
