Armed suspect shot dead by Police during robbery attempt at Chinese supermarket

An armed suspect was shot dead last evening by the Police during a robbery attempt at the People’s Choice supermarket on Mandela Avenue in Georgetown. The dead man has been identified as Emmanuel Smith, who was previously charged in connection with a number of armed robbery cases.

The Guyana Police Force has reported that its investigations revealed that just after 8:30 pm on Wednesday, three men entered the Chinese-owned supermarket and forced the two unarmed security guards on duty to lie on the ground while pointing a gun at them. Only one of the three men was armed, according to the Police.

Investigators reported that during the robbery attempt, an alert Police rank who was on mobile patrol observed the robbery attempt and ventured into the supermarket, coming under fire from the armed man.

The Police told investigators that he returned fire, hitting the armed man while his two accomplices bolted from the scene. The injured robbery suspect collapsed and died just outside the supermarket.

A .38 revolver with three live rounds and a number of spent shells were recovered at the scene, where the robbery suspect was also pronounced dead.

The Police have since indicated that the other two suspects are identifiable and efforts are underway to locate them.
