Police on the East Coast of Demerara have arrested three suspects over the armed robbery of the LQ Chinese supermarket at Success on the East Coast of Demerara.

The arrest of Cleveland Cross, Orwin Smith and Showana Sobers came hours after the robbery took place on Friday night.

According to Police reports, the first suspect, Cleveland Cross, was arrested at his Plaisance home after the Police visited the house and carried out a search based on a tip-off.

The Police said a search of the man’s bedroom uncovered several cellphones, a laptop and a black ski mask.

The man reportedly admitted to investigators that he and a group of friends carried out a robbery at the Chinese supermarket. However, he complained that he only got some phone cards from the robbery and had already sold the cards.

The Police said the suspect was placed in custody, and later on Saturday, investigators visited the home of Orwin Smith and his girlfriend in Plaisance based on information they had received.

The man was reportedly found with a black bag in his possession. Investigators said a search of that bag revealed a black FNS-40 handgun with one magazine which contained eleven 9mm rounds.

A further search was conducted in Smith’s home and the investigating ranks said they found another handgun along with a quantity of cash. The Police said the suspect admitted that he was part of the robbery at the supermarket and the money at his home was his “cut” from the crime.

The suspect and his girlfriend were both arrested and remain in custody.

The entire robbery was caught on surveillance cameras. Four armed suspects were seen barging into the supermarket and attacking the cashiers, the security guard and customers before emptying the two cash registers.

Customers were forced to lie on the ground as the robbery was carried out and the security guard was forced to the back of the building. One of the suspects was later seen hitting a female cashier across the face and hand.

Investigations are ongoing as the other suspects are being sought.
