Asst. Superintendent of Police charged over signing contracts for Home Affairs PS

An Assistant Superintendent of Police who has been interdicted from duty is facing charges of misconduct in public office for allegedly signing contracts on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs for repairs to a number of Police buildings.

Asst. Superintendent Kurt Smith appeared in Court on Wednesday and was hit with six counts of misconduct in public office. The charges were laid against him by the Special Organised Crime Unit of the Police Force.

A Police statement explained that the Asst. Superintendent was the Officer in Charge of the Finance Department of the Force, and between December 2021 and February 2022, he signed contracts that were awarded to six contractors in the slot on the contract designated for the Permanent Secretary of the Home Affairs Ministry as the Accounting Officer. The contracts totaled more than $9.7 million.

He was not required to enter a plea to the charges and was placed on a total of $600,000 bail. SOCU had filed similar charges against him previously.

The matter will continue in the new month.
