Close relatives and friends of the murdered 28-year-old woman, Babita Sarjou burst into tears outside the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday as the men responsible for her death were charged.

Sarjou’s mother, sister and other relatives wept uncontrollably and embraced each other outside the Courthouse, moments after her ex – husband and another man appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McClennan and were remanded.

The murdered woman’s ex husband, 39 – year – old Shardanand Narine, called Anand, was charged and remanded along with 35 year old Darrol Punton for the murder committed back in November 2010.

It is believed that the two conspired to murder the woman who was subject to prior abuse from her husband.

They were not required to plea to the indictable charge and will return to Court on June 21.

Sarjou’s remains were found buried in the yard where her ex husband continued to live with another woman and his mother. The remains were discovered this past Sunday, six years after she went missing.

Narine, who told the court that he is a businessman, has one child with the deceased.

The six-year missing person’s case became a homicide case on Sunday afternoon when Police investigators made a major breakthrough as they discovered the remains of Sarjou.

The 28-year-old woman left her Timehri house on Diwali eve in 2010 to view the motorcade. She was not heard from or seen since that 4th November date. Relatives have long suspected that her husband was responsible for her disappearance but there was never any concrete evidence that could tie him to the disappearance until now.

Sarjou’s mother told reporters at court on Wednesday that she is happy that the police had finally acted on their suspicions and brought closure to her disappearance.
