“Baby Skello” remanded to prison over Blasphemous libel charge

Local social media star, Daniel Wharton aka “Baby Skello” was charged this morning with Blasphemous libel and has been remanded to jail.

He made the appearance before Magistrate Judy Latchman, who ordered the young man remanded to prison until the 1st July, 2025, when the case will continue.

The charge against Wharton stemmed from a song he released on his TikTok page with several vulgar lyrics that made references to the Hindu Goddess, Mother Lakshmi.

Following the backlash, Wharton removed the song from his social media pages and apologised to the Hindu community. He was summoned by the Ethnic Relations Commission, but it is unclear whether he ever appeared before the Commission.

In the initial stages of the investigation, the Police issued a wanted bulletin for Wharton and kept him in custody for three days after he surrendered to investigators. He has also reportedly lost his job over the controversy.

The charge of Blasphemous libel is filed against persons who might have committed the crime of insulting, offending or vilifying a religious God.

Under the laws of Guyana,  someone found guilty of the crime could be sentenced to as much as one year in prison.
