Berbice cane cutter remanded to prison for murder of 6-year-old son

Three days after leading police investigators to a canal where the body of his six-year-old son had been dumped, a 45-year-old West Coast Berbice cane harvester was remanded to prison for the gruesome murder of the little body.

The accused, Bharrat Jaikarran of Bath Settlement was remanded to prison today when he appeared before Magistrate Shareefa Parks at the Weldaad Magistrates’ Court, charged with murder.

It is alleged that Jaikarran murdered his son, Orlando Jaikarran, last week and dumped his remains in a canal at Waterloo, West Coast Berbice.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Garfield Edwards told the Court that case was brought against the cane harvester based on legal advice provided by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

However, he said the investigation remains open, explaining that another suspect is under probe. That other suspect is believed to be the man’s religious leader.

As the Police Prosecutor addressed the Court, the dead child’s mother broke down in tears, as she heard the particulars of the case.

Jaikarran was remanded to prison until November 12, when he is expected to appear before the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court for the continuation of the case.

The partly decomposed and decapitated body of the boy was found early on Tuesday morning during a search operation at a sea dam in Bath Settlement, Berbice.

The boy was reported missing by his father six days prior. The same father, Bharrat Jaikarran, is the prime suspect in the murder and remains in Police custody.

The father had initially claimed that he was unaware of the child’s whereabouts and had last seen him when he put him to bed on the 13th October. He reported the boy missing on the morning of the 14th October and initially assisted in the search operations.

However, this past weekend, security video recordings from a house in the same area where the man lives, revealed footage of the man walking from his home holding a child late on the night on October 13, and returning to his home without the child.

Police investigators arrested the father and confronted him with the new evidence, resulting in him providing information about where the child’s body was dumped.

When the body was discovered, the head was missing along with one of the arms and a part of a leg. The police said there were also chop wounds to the body.

The young boy and the man’s two other children lived with him. The man and his wife reportedly separated sometime back and he took custody of their three children, raising them with the ex-wife providing monthly financial support.

The woman said she was abused during their relationship, and that forced her to leave.

She said after the ex-husband dragged her before the Court for custody of the three children, she opted to have him take custody, while she continued to support them financially.
