With protesting members of the public shouting loudly that justice must be received in the matter, the two Berbice men accused of murdering 13-year-old, Leonard Archibald, appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court this morning and have been remanded to prison.
19-year-old, Omardai Christopher and 29-year-old, Hilary Edwards, were not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge when they appeared in Court.
The charge stated that the two between September 17 and September 23, 2017, murdered the Berbice teen and dumped his body in the Berbice river.
The appearance lasted less than 30 minutes and the men were whisked off in Police custody.
The two were charged for the boy’s murder after Hilary Edwards reportedly admitted to raping and murdering the teenager and getting the help of Christopher to dump the teen’s body.
However, while Edwards remained silent during his arrival and departure from the Courthouse, his co-accused declared his innocence and shouted to the media that Edwards had wrongfully involved him in the matter and he will prove to the court that he had nothing to do with the boy’s death.
The two men will remain in custody for the duration of the trial. The Wednesday morning court appearance came just one day after the teen was laid to rest following a moving service at his mother’s home.
President David Granger has since extended sympathy to the boy’s family.
The 13-year-old was reported missing two Sundays ago, when he never returned home from a bicycle ride through the village.
As the search for him intensified, villager, Hilary Edwards was arrested after persons recalled hearing screams from the house where he lived around the same time that the boy had gone missing.
Edwards eventually led investigators to the area where he said he dumped the boy’s body. The bicycle that the teen was riding was discovered at the scene and one day later, his body was found on the foreshore.
