Bilateral trade between Guyana and the United States surpassed US$4.7 Billion in 2024

Bilateral trade between Guyana and the US surpassed US$4.7 Billion in 2024, US Ambassador Nicole Theriot disclosed during a celebration to mark the 249th Anniversary of US Independence on Friday night.

Reflecting on the connections between the United States and Guyana, Ambassador Theriot said the countries’ commercial ties continue to deepen and expand.

“Over the past year, we’ve reached another milestone: bilateral trade in physical goods alone surpassed $4.7 billion U.S. – a new record. The number of U.S. companies working with Guyanese partners continues to grow, along with sustained investment across many sectors,” the US Ambassador said.

She said in 2024 alone, Guyana and the US celebrated many new ventures, which included the launching of new companies and groundbreaking partnerships. The US Envoy said those ventures have influenced Guyana’s growth – economically, socially, and strategically.

“Take, for instance, the government’s astute decision to deploy U.S. made scanners at all ports of entry, or the approval of Starlink to expand reliable internet connectivity nationwide. These are strategic moves that support a safer, more connected, more secure Guyana. And we’re definitely not slowing down. We’re collaborating on critical infrastructure projects, including the transformative deepwater port, road and rail project. These are nation-building investments that can shape the trajectory of a country for generations to come,” Ambassador Theriot said.

She said “as Guyana’s preferred partner,” the US is honoured to be part of that journey, and stands committed to helping Guyana build its legacy of growth and shared prosperity.

President Irfaan Ali, in his address, also acknowledged the US “as Guyana’s preferred partnered,” noting that their partnership is deeply rooted in the foundation of common values, mutual respect and mutual trust.

He said there is much to be gain through continued interaction with the US within the framework of the several programmes of cooperation and projects between the two countries.

“As the Government of Guyana pursues a comprehensive national development agenda with measures to fuel economic growth, strengthen social development and uplift local communities, we are pleased to work with the United States to build our capacity in areas of neutral interest, including combating transnational organized crime, economic development, trade, agriculture technology and advancing energy security,” he said.

He added that Guyana values its strategic partnership with the US, and remains committed to engaging the US on the implementation and execution of their bilateral cooperation agenda.

“We must do nothing that would put these partnerships that we have worked so hard to develop at risk. Guyana values a strategic partnership between our countries and welcomes the continued commitment of the United States to remain engaged in implementation and execution of our bilateral cooperation agenda. In this regard, I want your excellency to know that Guyana’s economic prospects have been significantly strengthened by additional oil discoveries and investments and increased productivity, particularly fostering energy resilience,” President Ali said.

The US and Guyana have shared diplomatic ties for more than 50 years.
