Trade between Guyana and the UK reached £1.6 Billion in 2023

Private sector trade between Guyana and the United Kingdom reached a staggering £1.6 Billion last year, President Ali announced last evening.

Speaking at the British High Commission’s celebration of the King’s birthday, President Ali said despite many challenges over the past years, relations between Guyana and the UK remain strong.

He said there has been increased economic and investment activity between the two nations, which has resulted in massive growth for a number of local sectors.

“We have seen the progression in our private sector partnership which has contributed more than £1.8 Billion in goods and services between the two countries in 2023. The Commitment to economic growth and prosperity is evident, and I am encouraged for further collaboration in various sectors including tourism, infrastructure, tourism, security, health and more importantly, food security,” the President stated.

At the level of Government to Government partnerships, the President said those relations have been bearing fruit, adding that there are a number of major projects currently underway and many others will be financed by the British Government.

“For the first time in the history of our country, most of the projects that are ongoing, the transformative projects, those in the pipeline and those that are being conceptualized are done so with UK financing and UK support at the conceptualization and planning phases. I look forward therefore, for the continuous support in fostering economic growth, trade relations and sustainable development initiatives,” the President said.

Meanwhile, British High Commissioner to Guyana, Jane Miller, noted that the United Kingdom will continue to work with Guyana to develop key sectors. She said the local UK office will be playing a more active role to facilitate additional economic activities to further solidify ties between the two nations.

“Underpinning everything that the High Commission does here we remain committed in advancing governance, democracy and human rights. Over the last year the High Commission has engaged in a number of activities that strengthened our ties and demonstrated our unwavering support for Guyana“, she said.

It was also made clear that the UK remains firm in its support for Guyana in the ongoing border case with Venezuela. The High Commissioner said the defence apparatus of the UK is actively involved in reviewing the capabilities of the Guyana Defence Force, and will be providing additional training for security officials as well.
