Guyana seeks British help to tackle public security issues

Guyana intends to seek the help of the British government in reforming the Guyana Police Force and give assistance to the security sector.

President David Granger has announced that the government has already approached the British government seeking to reintroduce the Security Sector Reform Programme which was scrapped under the previous administration.

The President told a meeting of the Private Sector Commission on Monday that there is a need to address the public security problem and his government has decided to re-engage the British on the multi million dollar security reform programme.

The British High Commissioner has since confirmed that the request was made but explained that it is not clear whether the same level of funding is still available.

The project was first unveiled by the British government more than seven years ago but its implementation faced a number of hurdles as the former PPP government objected to some of the requirements by the British government as it relates to oversight.

Members of the private sector have been pressing the government to aggressively address the crime problem in the country. Guyana continues to face high incidents of murders and robberies.
