Bosai puts retrenchment on hold but will offer less working hours

The Bosai Bauxite company of Linden agreed this afternoon to put a hold on the retrenchment of 47 workers who would have been sent home on Friday August 7, 2015.

Company officials met today with union officials from the National Association of Agricultural Commercial and Industrial Employees. The meeting was called under the Chairmanship of the Ministry of Social Protection and followed an early morning protest and strike action by Bosai workers who feared being dismissed.

While Bosai has put the retrenchment on hold, it has decided to reduce the working hours for employees represented by NAACIE from 12 hours to 8 hours per day.

The agreement states that “in the place of the retrenchment, workers belonging to the Union’s bargaining unit would be offered eight (8) hours work per day instead of twelve (12) hours. The Union undertakes to consult with members of the bargaining unit advising them of this offer and confer Management about its acceptance or otherwise at 10:00am on Monday 10th August, 2015”.

Bosai and NAACIE also agreed that there will be no victimization on either side. There will be no transfers, termination/dismissals intimidation or retrenchment because of the protest action by the workers.

All of the workers are expected to be back on the job on Friday.

The Bauxite company has been facing financial problems as it finds it difficult to attract new markets. Production had to be reduced and the company was moving to retrench the 47 workers to cushion the effects of the financial situation in which it has found itself.
