Both truck drivers in Sheriff Street deadly collision served with notice of intended prosecution

The Guyana Police Force reported today that one of the drivers involved in yesterday’s deadly collision involving two sand trucks has been released from the hospital, while the other driver remains hospitalised with serious injuries.

The accident claimed the life of 42-year-old electrical contractor, Carlton Smartt, who was jogging at the side of the roadway, when one of the trucks crushed him after their collision.

In a statement this afternoon, the Guyana Police Force identified the two drivers as 28-year-old Denzel Webb from Belfield, East Coast Demerara and 26-year-old Emmanuel Henry from Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.

The police statement explained that the truck that was being driven by the 28-year-old Denzel Webb, was proceeding West along the Southern drive lane on Dennis Street at a fast rate and on the approach of Sheriff Street, failed to comply with the stop sign and continued proceeding further West and into the path of the other truck, which was proceeding North along Sheriff Street at a fast rate, resulting in the collision.

One of the trucks spun out of control and crashed into a motor car along Dennis Street before hitting down pedestrian, Carlton Smartt, crushing him to death.

The other truck came to a halt along Sheriff Street after crashing into a number of parked vehicles and into the front of a building.

The Police said both drivers have been served with a notice of intended prosecution.
