The Canadian Government through its High Commission in Trinidad and Tobago, has written to recently elected PPP Presidential Candidate, Irfaan Ali, indicating to him that he should not travel to Canada at this time in wake of the pending criminal matters that he is facing in the local Court.
Ali is facing 19 criminal charges in the Court related to the alleged fraudulent sale of state lands while he served as Housing Minister under the last PPP government.
The charges were filed against him before he was elected as the Presidential Candidate for the PPP.
In a statement this afternoon, Mr. Ali said he was scheduled to leave Guyana today for the Diaspora engagement in Toronto but received a correspondence from the Canadian High Commission in Trinidad and Tobago, telling him that he should not travel. He said he has been given 30 days to respond to the correspondence.
Ali has described the charges against him as “trumped up”.
Although the Canadian Government has blocked his travel at this time to Toronto, Mr. Ali today said he has a valid Canadian visa and a valid Guyana passport in his possession.
He said as he awaits the outcome of the action by the Canadian government, he wants his supporters in Canada to know that the circumstances surrounding his travel to Canada are out of his control.
