Days after a Special Disciplinary Tribunal established by the Police Service Commission completed its hearing into disciplinary complaints that were filed against Assistant Commissioner Calvin Brutus and provided the Commission with its report, the Police Service Commission has fired Mr. Brutus.
Mr. Brutus never attended any of hearings and has challenged the legality and constitutionality of the Tribunal that was probing the matters against him.
A number of sources close to the Police Service Commission confirmed to News Source this evening that the Tribunal found Mr. Brutus guilty of the disciplinary charges that were laid against him. The Tribunal recommended that he be relieved of his job in the Guyana Police Force.
News Source made several calls to get a comment from the Police Commissioner, Clifton Hicken. All of our calls and WhatsApp messages were left unanswered.
Meanwhile, one of Mr. Brutus’ Attorney, Eusi Anderson said he has not received any information about any decision by the Disciplinary Tribunal or the Police Service Commission.
News Source has learnt that a number of senior Government officials were informed of the decision late this afternoon.
The complaint that the Tribunal examined were related to the procurement of goods for the Guyana Police Force in the tune of millions of dollars. The goods were reportedly never delivered but monies were paid out. That complaint also forms part of the more than 260 charges that Mr. Brutus is currently facing in the Courts for various financial crimes and claims of money laundering. The case is ongoing.
Mr. Brutus was placed on administrative leave following the filing of those charges and maintained his occupancy of a Guyana Police Force apartment at Eve Leary.
The criminal charges against him were filed by the Special Organised Unit after it carried out an investigation into large sums of money that were found in the accounts belonging to Mr. Brutus, his wife, and their toddler son and companies owned by them. Bank accounts with more than $500 million in them were frozen as part of the investigations. Mr. Brutus and his wife have always maintained their innocence.
