
Tragedy gripped the Durban Backlands community this morning when City Councillor for the area and businessman, Kyle Solomon was brutally stabbed to death after chasing a teen he caught breaking into his shop.
Solomon reportedly woke up at around 4am and noticed someone trying to break into his shop. Neighbours said he raised an alarm and after recognizing the suspect as a teen from the community, he gave chase.
The 47-year-old man caught up with the suspect, but after grabbing him, the young man whipped out a knife from his waist and repeatedly stabbed Solomon.
The Police report said Solomon was stabbed to his chest, his lower abdomen, his left side rib, his left arm and one to his left elbow.
He collapsed as the suspect escaped from the area. Solomon was taken to the Georgetown Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Police said the suspect is 16-years-old and lives in the same community. This morning, concerned residents gathered as they remembered Solomon as someone who always looked out for his community.
The Police said investigations are ongoing as efforts continue to locate the suspect.
Kyle Solomon was a first term Councillor on the Georgetown City Council for the Durban Backlands community. His colleagues said he was an outspoken activist and community leader, who always pushed for the development of his constituency.
City Council officials have extended their condolences to his family.
