
Police have arrested a 21-year-old truck driver for causing the death of a 65-year-old cyclist this morning in an accident at Covent Garden on the East Bank of Demerara.
A Police report identified the dead pensioner as Vakeanand Sukdeo of Little Diamond on the East Bank of Demerara. The truck involved in the accident was being driven by its owner, 21-year-old Joshua Lim, who provided his address as Kuru Kuru.
According to the Police, the elderly victim was riding his bicycle south along the western driving lane of the public road at Covent Garden, while the heavy duty truck was being driven north along the eastern driving lane of the same road.
Eyewitnesses reported that as the truck driver approached an open space between the concrete median that separates the two carriageways, he made a right turn onto the eastern carriageway and collided with the 65-year-old man on his bicycle.
The accident victim suffered multiple injuries after he was hit down by the truck. An emergency medical team was summoned and Sukdeo was pronounced dead on the scene.
A post-mortem examination is to be carried out on the body.
The young truck driver remains in Police custody as the investigation continues.
Five persons have lost their lives in various accidents on the roadways over the past three days.
