Brick laid for start of construction for US$300M Qatari Hotel on Carifesta Ave.

In a ceremonial bricklaying ceremony on Sunday for a US$300 Million Qatari Hotel on Carifesta Avenue, President Irfaan Ali noted the benefits that the new facility will add to Guyana’s tourism product.

The hotel is expected to include 260 rooms and 150 apartments along with conference and other facilities. It will be built on the National Insurance Scheme Ground along Carifesta Avenue, which is situated on land that was gifted to the city of Georgetown for recreational purposes by former plantation owners in 1887.

Despite some controversy surrounding the ownership of the land and acquisition of the property for hotel development, President Irfaan Ali said the development fits into the Government’s transformative plans for the City of Georgetown. He said Guyana will continue to welcome and build partnerships with investors from across the globe.

“These investors for these hotels span from  North America to local and regional investors. So you can see the diversity in the spread of investment that is coming into the country. We also have proposals that will see new announcements being made before the end of the year”, the President said.

The new hotel complex will be built by the private company, Assets Group, Qatar.

The President the Government has seen tremendous investment benefits from countries in the Middle East, since it has focused some attention on that region.

“Since we have established a strong focus on the Middle East and other parts of the world that were not traditionally focused on investment in this region, we have seen tremendous interest, and Qatar is one of those countries that has shown remarkable speed in expanding transforming this interest into reality”, President Ali said.

Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism, Oneidge Walrond, said the initiative and investment from the Qatari group will augur well for the development of the country’s tourism sector. She said on the completion of the hotel, more than 1000 rooms will be available within the Kingston stretch, making reference to the nearby Pegasus and Marriott hotels. She said the Government will also be focusing its attention to the development of more green spaces and a sustainable environment.

The Georgetown Seafront Hotel and Complex is expected to be completed within three years and serve as a five-star facility.
