Government counting on hotel projects to boost tourism numbers

President Irfaan Ali, on Monday, joined investors of Pasha Global Investments for the sod turning exercise for a 500-room hotel to be constructed at Lilliendaal on the East Coast of Demerara.

The first phase of the project will see 150 rooms being constructed by the end of 2024 and the second phase will see between 350 to 500 rooms constructed.

Describing the project as transformational, the President said the hotel will complement the other hotels currently under construction in and around the country as demand for accommodation grows.

“With all these hotels, the country must be able to build the infrastructure to support these hotels, not only from a corporate perspective but from a broad mechanism, a broad platform that will support these investments. From the human resources perspective, we are already training, we have started and our aim is to train 6000 Guyanese in the hospitality industry,” the President said.

With the new hotels coming on stream, the President said the government will be investing heavily in tourism to make Guyana the destination of choice for various services

But in all of this the President said, the government will have to take new pieces of legislation to Parliament to make the sector function in an organized way.

“But the very thing we have to do is to create the foundation, we have to have the legal framework, the institutional framework to support these transformations, but because these types of transformation is not physical, sometimes we don’t appreciate the value and the work that goes behind this transformation”.

The government believes that other sectors will benefit from the hotel boom since demands for goods and services will increase. At least four other major hotel projects are to come on stream soon.
