Agents of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit came under fire during a drug eradication operation in Berbice on Tuesday at #69 village in Corentyne.
During the operation, as CANU agents were approaching a car suspected of being used for drug trafficking, two men jumped out and opened fire on the CANU agents, and managed to flee the scene as the agents sought cover.
In the car which carried registration number, PKK 4588, CANU found 129 pounds of marijuana in several large parcels. CANU said it is suspected that the marijuana was being taken to neighbouring Suriname.
The seized marijuana carries a street value of more than $17.6 million. CANU said its operations in the Corentyne area are part of efforts to curb the flow of narcotics in the Berbice region.
