Unlicensed driver dies in West Bank smash-up

A 49-year-old unlicensed driver from the lodge community lost his life yesterday morning when he lost control of the car he was driving and slammed into the side of a truck, flipping over in the process, before slamming into another car.

Eyewitnesses said the man was speeding at the time.

The dead man has been identified as Joseph Charles. The accident took place along the Schoonard Public road on the West Bank of Demerara.

A police statement on the incident said another person who was in the car was also injured and has been hospitalized.

The driver was pronounced dead at the West Demerara Hospital after his body was removed from the mangled wreck. A post-mortem examination is to be performed on the remains.

The police also said a breathalyzer test was done on the driver of the truck, and there was no trace of alcohol found in his system.
