The number of deaths as a result of road accidents in Guyana continue to climb.

A 38-year-old man died on the spot today after losing control of his motorcar and crashing into culvert just off the roadway at Bell Vue on the West Bank of Demerara. The accident occurred around 10:30 this morning.

The dead man was identified as Shamall Mohess.

According to Police investigators, the car was being driven at a fast rate of speed when the driver lost control and collided with a culvert on the western side of the road.

As a result of the collision, the motor car toppled and ended up in a trench on the western side of the road, and got submerged with the driver inside.

The vehicle was pulled out of the trench by a group of citizens with the assistance of a motor lorry.

The driver was taken out of the vehicle in an unconscious state with injuries to his head and body.

He was pronounced dead at the west Demerara Hospital. A post-mortem examination is to be performed on his body. He was the only occupant of the vehicle.

Two days ago, two other young men lost their lives in a motorcycle accident in Berbice. Guyana has seen a 100% increase in fatal road accidents since the start of the year.
