CANU destroys cocaine discovered buried near illegal airstrip in Region One

The Customs Anti Narcotics Unit has destroyed the more than four tonnes of cocaine that was found buried near an illegal airstrip at Matthew’s Ridge in Region One.

Agents from CANU took samples of the cocaine for investigation and prosecution purposes and destroyed the rest. The Guyana Defence Force assisted with the destruction of the almost $200 Million worth of the cocaine.

A number of persons in the area have been questioned about the cocaine and the movement of illegal aircraft in the area. The CANU investigation which led to the discovery of the large amount of cocaine was triggered by the discovery of an illegal airstrip, which was covered by construction plastic to make it difficult to spot from the air.

During an operation over the weekend, which was supported by the GDF Special Forces and the US Drug Enforcement Agency, CANU discovered the more the 4.4 tonnes of cocaine buried in bunker-like crates near the airstrip. It is unclear when the cocaine was brought into the country and buried in the area, but it is suspected, it might have been very recently.

CANU also suspects that a number of local and foreign persons might have been involved in the delivery and burial of the cocaine. The investigations are ongoing.
