The discovery of an illegal airstrip in the Rupununi region has prompted an investigation by the Guyana Defence Force and the Police.

In a statement on Saturday evening, the GDF announced that during an early morning patrol in the Hinterland region by its ranks, the discovery was made.

The ranks also found several dug out trenches, one chainsaw, and fuel drums among other things in the area.

The GDF said the discovery represents the challenges faced by the security Forces in the Hinterland. Over the past few years several illegal aircraft were seized by the state and several illegal airstrips were discovered.

It is suspected that the illegal airstrips are used to ferry drugs and illegal fuel between neighbouring states and Guyana.
