Cement and steel rod subsidy for homebuilders to roll out next week

The Ministry of Housing’s steel rod and cement subsidy for homebuilders will be rolled out next Tuesday and applications can be made to access the subsidy from the same day.

During an appearance on the JumpStart morning show today, Minister of Housing and Water Colin Croal said anyone who owns their own land, whether it was bought from government or a private interest, would be eligible to access the building support. The support will be for residential only and not commercial purposes.

The Minister made it clear that in addition to ownership of the land, the homebuilder must also have an approved building plan for their new house.

The initiative which was announced earlier this year by President Ali, will see persons building low cost homes that average $6 million receiving a sling of cement and 80 lengths of half-inch steel rods along with 560 three-eight inch steel rods.

Persons who are building homes at an average cost of $6 million to $25million will receive two slings of cement. A sling of cement contains between 35 to 40 sacks of cement depending on the brand.

Minister Croal said a special committee has been established at his Ministry to review the applications to ensure there is no attempt to cheat the system. He also explained that application forms will be made available from this weekend on the websites and social media pages of the Ministry of Housing and Water.

According to Croal, the initiative is to encourage potential homeowners to get the work started on their new homes. He said many of them will be able to start the foundation of their homes with the products provided.
