Chief Co-op Officer blocks newly elected Public Service Credit Union Management from taking up office until info on elections is provided

The Ministry of Labour’s Chief Co-operative and Development Officer, Janaknauth Panchu, has blocked the new Management Committee of the Guyana Public Service Co-operative Credit Union from taking office until information regarding last Saturday’s Special General Meeting and Elections is provided.

The outgoing Committee of Management, led by Karen Vansluytman-Corbin, has protested last Saturday’s Elections, saying among other things that the meeting was illegal, since according to the outgoing committee, there was no quorum.

Corbin and her team, wrote to Chief Co-op Officer, detailing a number of alleged irregularities, requesting that the meeting and elections be nullified.

Today, the Chief Co-op Officer wrote to the Chairman of the Special General Meeting who is the current Vice Chairman of the Credit Union, Patrick Mentore, stating that it was brought to his attention that last Saturday’s Court-ordered meeting was not properly constituted.

The CCDO has asked Mentore to provide the names of the list of persons that attended the Special Meeting both virtually and in-person as well as a list of persons who voted.

He said he was informed that the Credit Union has a membership base of 25,385, and wants Mr. Mentore to confirm that that is the true reflection of the Credit Union’s membership.

“Unless the above is provided, yourself and other member must refrain from assuming the duties of the Committee of Management of transact any business whatsoever on behalf of the Credit Union,” the CCDO told Mentore.

He reminded that Regulations 17 and 21 of the Co-operative Societies Act, clearly state how a quorum is determined for a Special General Meeting and how a Committee of Management can be replaced.

Yesterday major drama erupted at the Credit Union’s Head office as the outgoing Management Committee refused to make way for the new Management Committee to take up its position.

A team headed by former Chairman of the Credit Union, Trevor Benn, won the Special Elections on Saturday.
