Candidates accuse Public Service Credit Union Management of delaying tactics as elections date approaches

The incumbent Committee of Management of the Guyana Public Service Co-operative Credit Union is being accused of applying delay tactics for the hosting of the Special General Meeting by the 24th October.

The Committee of Management headed by Karen Vanslyutman-Corbin has named October 24 as the day for the holding of the Special General meeting and elections.

However, since that announcement, there has been no other public pronouncement on the agenda for the meeting, the polling places, the voting mechanism to be used and other systems which should have been in place for the hosting of the elections.

Today, the team of candidates for the elections headed by former Chairman, Trevor Benn accused the current Committee of Management of disregarding the current Court Order, which dictated the timeline for the notice and hosting of the elections.

Vice Chairman of the Management Committee Patrick Mentore, who broke ranks with the Committee to join Mr. Benn’s team, said the Committee of Management’s posture appears set to breach the Court order. He accused Committee members of doing everything in their power to frustrate the process for the successful hosting of the meeting.

“Such a display of intransigence, this obsolete refusal to prepare adequately to deal with the members leaves a bitter taste in one’s mouth that will be eliminated by the recall of the current Committee of Management,” Mr. Mentore said during the press conference today.

Attorney-at-Law, Christopher Thompson, who was recently sacked by the Committee of Management as the Credit Union’s legal officer, is also running for a position on the Management Committee.

Thompson said the Management Committee appears to be playing with the emotions of the organisation’s members.

He opined that since the Court order, the Committee had the opportunity to prepare for the special meeting, but instead, it has shown its disregard for the membership.

“We have not even heard when there will be a nomination date and time is not our friend at this stage at all. This is the eleventh hour, we have not heard of a nomination day, we have not heard of any polling stations in any part of the country, so I think there is a real, genuine concern as to whether or not the court order will be complied with,” Thompson said.

For his part, Trevor Benn said the Committee of Management should understand that the Credit Union is bigger than any individual.

“This is bigger than Trevor Benn, this is not about Trevor Benn, and this is about poor people and their prosperity. The Guyana Public Service Co-operative Credit Union is there to support and encourage and help ordinary people who have no other source or ability to get loan at another place, most of them get turn down from Private sector organizations and this is why we are fighting to ensure that this facility remains viable”, Benn said.

Senior officials at the Credit Union have also been accused of colluding with the Management Committee to stall the preparation process for the holding of the elections.
