Venezuela rejects US fighter jets flyover of Guyana as “provocation”

Hours after two US fighter jets conducted a flyover of Georgetown, with support of the Government of Guyana and the Guyana Defence Force, the Venezuelan Government objected to exercise, describing it as a provocation.

In a statement, the Minister of Defense of Venezuela, Vladimir Padrino López, described the US military exercise in Guyana as “repeated provocations” by the United States Southern Command.

He said “the Bolivarian National Armed Forces strongly reject these repeated provocations by the Southern Command, sponsored by the Government of Guyana, which has assumed the role of a new North American colony,”

The Venezuelan Offiical reported that the Comprehensive Aerospace Defense System “remains activated in the event of any attempt to violate Venezuelan geographic space,” including Guyana’s Essequibo region, which Venezuela continues to claim as its own.

The US Government has made known its full support of Guyana in the ongoing border controversy which is currently before the International Court. The US Southern Command over the years, has hosted a number of joint military exercises with Guyana.
