More than 400 workers of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council will receive a $40,000 bonus in time for the new year, City Mayor Alfred Mentore has announced.
Mayor Mentore told the 30-member Council today that after analyzing the City Council’s finances, a decision was taken to pay the 483 workers a bonus of $40,000 each on or before the 31st December 2025.
“We made some decisions last year to provide a one-off bonus for everyone and we have also decide to do that this year as well. And, we have since approved $40,000 one-off bonus to every staff member of this council so that they could have that to use for their Christmas and we ask that the monies be paid by the 31st December,” the City Mayor told the Council.
He said the bonus will cushion the impact of the rise in the cost of living for the workers.
It was explained that the bonus is being offered following consultations with the Guyana Labour Union and the Guyana Local Government Officers Union.
During a meeting with the unions last week, the GLU had proposed that the workers be paid a one-month salary bonus. However, Mayor Mentore said the Council is no position to meet such a demand.
“GLU would have asked for some one month salary bonus as an increase but we told them that while we are looking at something that is favorable, or workable, one month is a little difficult for us to treat with at least at this time,” Mayor Mentore explained.
The Georgetown Mayor and City Council and the Unions are expected to continue negotiations on increased salaries and benefits for the workers.
Meanwhile, in keeping with tradition, the Mayor announced five on the spot promotions for five members of the City Constabulary who have provided 25 to 32 years of services.
Pamela Brotherson – a constable for 32 years, along with Mark Tarmon, Charmaine Garraway and Ayana Pompey, was promoted to Corporal.
