CANU intercepts $18M worth of mercury

One man is in custody following the discovery of several containers of mercury in his possession at Crabwood Creek in Corentyne, Berbice. The bust took place on Sunday and was carried out by the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit.

Mercury is a toxic and controlled substance that is used locally in some gold mining and other operations.

CANU said it launched an investigation into the movement of mercury after receiving information. That information led to the interception and search of a vehicle on Sunday, resulting in the discovery.

According to CANU, the seized mercury is estimated to have a value of $18 million. The substance has since been handed over to the Natural Resources Ministry, while the suspect remains in custody.
