The death toll from the coronavirus in Guyana continues to climb with four more deaths being recorded this past weekend.
The latest deaths have taken the death toll to 78 with 37 of those deaths taking place in the last 27 days of September.
All four of the persons reported to have died from COVID-19 complications this past weekend were below the age of 60, with the youngest being 36-years-old.
There are calls for the Ministry of Health to provide more details on the sudden spike in COVID-19 related deaths.
In the first four months of the pandemic (March to July), Guyana recorded a total of 20 COVID-19 related deaths. Between August 1 and September 27, that death toll climbed by 58.
In an interview last week, the Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony contributed the increase in the number of deaths to an increase in the number of persons with underlying conditions contracting the virus.
He said almost all of those who died had underlying conditions.
As of midnight Saturday, there were 47 new cases of coronavirus in the country.
