COVID-19 rate of spread and death continues to rise in Guyana

While the government is still to confirm the presence of one of the Coronavirus variants in Guyana, it is grappling now with an increase in daily infections and deaths.

In the past 24 hours, two more deaths and 137 new cases were recorded. The death toll has now climbed to 293. A total of 60 deaths have been recorded so far in the month of April.

This evening, there are more than 80 persons hospitalised with the virus and another 1505 persons who tested positive are in isolation at home.

The Health Ministry has found itself reminding citizens daily that the COVID-19 guidelines are still in place and will likely be in place for a long time unless the country curbs the spread of the virus. The Health Minister today said persons need to wear their masks and practice all other safety guidelines to protect themselves.

The vaccination drive by the government has been progressing well with more than 3000 persons being vaccinated daily. More than 128,000 persons have now received a first shot of the COVID-19 vaccine.
