A post-mortem examination was carried out on the body of opposition political activist Courtney Crum-Ewing on Friday. The 40-year-old man was executed while campaigning in the Diamond community on Tuesday evening.
According to the family’s attorney Nigel Hughes, the post-mortem examination found that Crom-Ewing was shot five times. Three of those shots were to the head, while one was to the back of the neck and the other to just under one of his arms.
Hughes said the shot to the back of the man’s neck was at point-blank range and gun powder residue was also found on the collar of the back of the shirt that he was wearing. The Attorney also revealed that two war heads were removed from the dead man’s head.
The Guyana Police Force had reported that Crom-Ewing was walking along the roadway when a car carrying four men pulled up alongside him and gunshots rang out. However, resident of the community have been maintaining that there was no car that drove in the Crom-Ewing’s direction. Some persons in the area said they believed the man was ambushed.
Sources close to the investigation told News Source on Friday that investigators also believe that Crom-Ewing may have been accosted by his killers and shot at close range rather than from a vehicle.
Based on the report of the post-mortem examination, it appeared as though the shooters were very close for him and their aim was to ensure that he was killed.
There is a call for an independent probe into the execution and President Donald Ramotar has instructed the top brass of the Guyana Police Force to leave no stone unturned as they probe the killing.
Crom-Ewing led a one man protest for weeks outside the office of the Attorney General calling for the AG’s resignation from office. He had filed a complaint to the police about being threatened by at least two top government officials. There are reports that those complaints were made to the Brickdam Police station.
