Defence objects to virtual testimony of former GECOM IT Manager in Election fraud trial

An attempt by the State to have the Guyana Election Commission’s (GECOM’s) former Deputy Chief Elections Officer and former IT Manager, Aneal Giddings, testify virtually this morning in the ongoing trial into the allegations of attempted fraud at the 2020 Elections, was met with repeated objections by the Defence, resulting in a premature adjournment.

Giddings was expected to be physically present in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court today to testify in the ongoing trial, but when the case was called before the Chief Magistrate (ag) Faith McGusty, he appeared virtually – a situation that did not sit well with the defence.

In objection, Defence Attorney Nigel Hughes told the Court that Giddings should not be allowed to make a virtual appearance, and should be present in court.

However, the State Prosecutor, Madana Rampersaud explained that Giddings was out of the jurisdiction, and it unclear when he would return to Guyana.

Announcing a brief adjournment, Chief Magistrate (ag) McGusty instructed the State Prosecutor to seek clarification from the witness on when he would be available to testify in person before the Court. However, when the case resumed minutes later, Rampersaud told the Court Giddings on his return to Guyana would inform the court, and he is likely to be out of the jurisdiction for another week.

The case was then adjourned to Wednesday, June 24.

Nine persons including the former Chief Elections Officer, Keith Lowenfield; former Deputy Chief Elections Officers (DCEO) Roxanne Myers and former Region 4 Returning Officer (RO) Clairmont Mingo are on trial. All of the accused have maintained their innocence.
