A dismissed rank of the Guyana Defence Force was today charged with rape and granted bail in the sum of $600,000.
The charge came on the same day that the Guyana Defence Force announced the dismissal of the soldier and two other ranks over the alleged incident, which had triggered an inquiry.
Charged with the offence of rape was former GDF rank, Winston Haynes aka Carlos Haynes. The other two ranks who were initially questioned as part of the probe, have not been charged.
The rank is accused of raping his 18-year-old girlfriend at the army’s military base at Timehri.
The incident allegedly took place while the young woman visited him at the army base. The young woman had reportedly refused to have sex with the soldier while his two colleagues looked on.
It is alleged that her refusal triggered the sexual assault in full view of the other two soldiers.
He was represented by Attorney Dexter Todd at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court today. Todd made a successful bail application and bail was granted in the sum of $600,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 27th, 2017.
