The Government of Guyana has given its no objection to a US$650,000 per month contract between the Guyana Power and Light Company, and Dominican Republic energy company, InterEnergy Group.

The contract is for InterEnergy to provide consultancy services to GPL. The procurement contract was a single source one that came before the cabinet on the 17th July, 2025 under the Office of the Prime Minister, News Source understands.

The contract comes at a time when the Government’s much touted gas-to-energy project continues to face major delays, and the national grid remains dependent on two rented powerships to meet national demand.

Just recently, the Guyana Power and Light company explained its relationship with InterEnergy after concerns were raised by workers about a possible takeover over the GPL operations.

GPL said in January 2024, the two sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore opportunities for collaboration. That MOU enabled GPL to benefit from IEG’s extensive technical expertise through consultation and knowledge sharing, the statement said.

GPL further explained that since then, both companies have been engaged in discussions focused on IEG providing technical assistance to support GPL’s ongoing and future infrastructure development projects.

According to GPL, as it undertakes major infrastructural upgrades to modernize and expand the national electricity grid, the need for specialized expertise is critical. It said InterEnergy Group, with its proven track record in building and managing successful electricity networks across the region, is well-positioned to provide valuable support.

GPL said the collaboration is not intended to displace or replace GPL employees, but it is designed to enhance the capabilities of GPL’s workforce.

GPL said its employees will benefit from training, exposure, and hands-on experience alongside international experts, thereby strengthening local capacity and ensuring long-term sustainability of the energy sector.
