Former Attorney General of Guyana and Former Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission, Senior Counsel Doodnauth Singh has died.
According To family members, he passed away on Wednesday evening at the Balwant Singh Hospital. He was 80 years old. Mr. Singh had been ailing for a while. He was well-respected in the legal circles as a smart and knowledgeable Senior Counsel.
He was appointed Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission in the lead up to the 1997 Elections. Those elections under his watch were controversial and the secret swearing-in of Janet Jagan as President stained Singh’s tenure as the GECOM head. He would leave the post and later appointed Attorney General. He held that position for a number of years under the Bharrat Jagdeo presidency. President Donald Ramotar on Wednesday night expressed his sympathy on the passing of Doodnaugh Singh.

“President Donald Ramotar is saddened by the news of the death of former Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Doodnauth Singh.
Mr. Singh, also a Senior Counsel, was a man of high intellect, having amassed great experience during his legal life, both locally and internationally. He served Guyana with utmost distinction, pride and selflessness.
He had given decades of service to Guyana, most in the legal profession, in which he was known as an outstanding legal luminary.
President Ramotar and First Lady Deolatchmee Ramotar, on behalf of the Government and people of Guyana express deepest condolence to the family and friends of the late Doodnauth Singh.”
