Former Attorney General of Guyana under the Dr. Cheddi Jagan PPP Civic administration, Senior Counsel Bernard DeSantos, passed away last evening at a city hospital after complaining of feeling unwell.
The 80-year-old was well known and well respected in the legal circles during his decades at the bar.
He was made a Senior Counsel during the Presidency of Hugh Desmond Hoyte back in 1991 and joined Dr. Cheddi Jagan on the campaign trail later that year as part of the civic component of the PPP Civic.
The British trained, Bernard DeSantos, was appointed Attorney General in 1992, just after Dr. Jagan won the Presidency. He remained in the position until 1997, when he chose to return to private practice.
Up until the time of his death, Mr. DeSantos was still very active at the local bar and made regular appearances before the Criminal and Civil Courts for several of his clients.
