Former President of the Guyana Teachers Union, Dr. Mark Lyte, who is now a candidate for the governing People’s Progressive Party, encouraged citizens this afternoon to gather their support behind the incumbent party to be assured of continued progress.
Dr. Lyte emerged on the PPPC’s platform at Albion this afternoon, announcing that he is not only endorsing the PPPC for a second term, but he is also offering himself up to serve the people of Guyana.
“I believe that where progress exists, we all should be on board, because progress is what will determine our children’s future because all of our contributions would have to lead towards getting a better Guyana for the next generation,” Lyte said.
Lyte, who led the teachers union for more than a decade, was at the helm of the union earlier this year when teachers went out on strike for more than 8 weeks against the Government seeking better salaries.
Lyte later agreed to a 10%, 8% and 9% increase for teachers for the years 2024- 2026. The move was rejected by the membership, but the deal was still signed.

At the PPP rally this afternoon, Lyte said the Government’s intervention for teachers has gone beyond his expectations.
“We have seen teachers throughout the length and breath of Guyana, which embraces equity and diversity in the education spectrum and I want to say that this progress is something that we need to build on, and the PPP/C is saying, forward together for a better Guyana,” Lyte said,.
He said in every sector there has been progress and urged persons to support the PPP so they can continue its transformative journey.
“Some persons are saying that we are only seeing roads, but I would like for them to take the scales off their eyes, because this development goes beyond roads. Let us talk about education, as an educator for over three decades, I can tell you that the education sector has never seen the kind of growth we have experienced in the last five years,” Lyte stated.
