An emergency assessment team led by President Irfaan Ali hurried out to the Essequibo region this afternoon following heavy winds and torrential rainfall moved through a number of communities, ripping roofs off a number of buildings, including the recently constructed Anna Regina Stadium.
Many residents across Anna Regina and surrounding communities said they have never experienced such a weather pattern. More than 100 buildings, including schools, government facilities and private homes were badly damaged.
The Hydromet service described the weather pattern as a squall which involves high winds during heavy rainfall. The Hydromet service is predicting more torrential rainfall tonight across the Essequibo and other areas.
President Ali said a full assessment will be carried out by the Civil Defence Commission as relief efforts will get underway.
