A company that is linked to the brother of President Irfaan Ali, has denied allegations of it receiving multiple Government contracts over a short period of time and preferential treatment.
The issue was first raised by Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed in a video release this morning.
In the video recording, Mr. Mohamed released multiple copies of documents allegedly showing the company, Sigma Engineers Incorporated, receiving multi billion dollar Government contracts days after its registration in Guyana.
In a statement hours after the video release, the Sigma company said it categorically rejects the allegations and what it considers to be serious misrepresentations of the facts in the issues highlighted by the Opposition leader. The company has indicated that it has engaged legal counsel and intends to pursue appropriate legal action.
The company has confirmed that it was first registered in Guyana in 2022, while it has been in business in Bangladesh since 2003. It claims it was only awarded its first contract this year.
However, a check of the social media pages of the Guyana Water Incorporated showed multiple highlights over the years of the Sigma company of Bangladesh completing various contracts for GWI and its officials touring various contract sites with Government officials.

The Guyana registered company admitted that the President’s brother, Mohamed Aqtar Ali, is its senior technical consultant in Guyana, but stated that he has no affiliation with the company in Bangladesh.
“The company respects due process and believes that public discourse concerning businesses operating in Guyana should be grounded in accurate and verifiable information. As the company continues to engage its legal counsel on this matter, further information regarding its operations and the issues raised will be provided at the appropriate time”, the statement said.

In his broadcast, the Opposition Leader accused the company and its principals of being involved in corrupt practices as he highlighted multiple documents, believed to be from the National Procurement and Tender Board, highlighting the award of multiple contracts to the Sigma company over the years since its establishment in Guyana for various multi-million dollar works with Guyana Water Incorporated.
The documents highlighted by Mr. Mohamed pointed to well construction and water treatment plant contracts.
