Essequibo woman arrested over fake kidnapping claim

Police in Essequibo have arrested a 22-year-old woman who made a claim that she was kidnapped on social media, but when visited by Police officers, her story turned out to be untrue.

In a Facebook post last week, the young woman claimed that after boarding a taxi with three other persons, she was kidnapped by the taxi driver and taken to an area against her will and dropped off.

She also claimed that she had filed a complaint at the Suddie Police Station and a search of the taxi driver’s vehicle unearthed a weapon.

The social media post got the attention of the Police in the area. The Police were unaware of the young woman making any such report to the station and there was no search of any car or the discovery of a weapon.

During questioning by the Police, the young woman failed to confirm ever making the report. She never visited the station.

Further questioning also revealed that the allegation against the taxi driver appeared false.

The young lady was arrested for causing public mischief and is could face Court later this week.
