Father and baby die in motorcycle crash; Baby’s Mother remains in critical condition

A tragic scene unfolded on Friday morning along the Orangestein Public Road, East Bank Essequibo when a 22-year-old motorcyclist, who had an amputated leg, crashed into a sales truck, while carrying his girlfriend and their young baby on his motorcycle.

The motorcyclist, Krishna Persaud and his 4-month old baby lost their lives in the accident, while the girlfriend, has been admitted to hospital in a critical condition.

A Police report on the accident stated that the sales truck was proceeding onto the roadway from the parking lot of a shopping mall, when the motorcyclist slammed into the truck as it was turning around on the roadway. The Police said the motorcyclist was riding at a fast rate and overtook another truck on the double yellow line that had stopped to allow the sales truck to turn onto the roadway.

The impact of the accident resulted in the motorcyclist, his girlfriend and their young baby being flung onto the roadway. All three suffered multiple injuries about their bodies, with the father and baby being pronounced dead at the scene, while the injured young woman was rushed to the hospital nursing serious head injuries.

The Police said the driver of the sales truck was taken into custody for questioning.

A breathalyser test was conducted on the driver, but there was no trace of alcohol detected. The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras in the area. The Police said it will be examining the recordings as part of the investigations.

The sales truck belongs to Demerara Distillers Limited. In a statement on Friday, the company extended condolences to the family of the dead father and son, and explained that it will not offer any other comment on the tragedy as the investigations are ongoing.
