Fire at Outreach Ministries Church was act of arson

Investigations into this morning’s fire at the Outreach Ministries Church on Durban Street in Georgetown, have revealed that the fire was an act of arson. A section of the church was damaged by the blaze, which was quickly extinguished by the Fire Service when they were summoned to the scene.

Initially, it was suspected that the fire was electrical in origin, but a surveillance video recording from a building next door captured footage of a man in a hooded jacket entering the bottom flat of church with a bottle in hand just before 5am.

The man was later seen hurrying out of the building, leaving a fire behind.

Pastor of the Church and Government Minister, Bishop Juan Edghill, has posted the video recording with the suspect on his social media pages, asking for anyone who may recognise him to provide the information to law enforcement.

Bishop Edghill said although the damage and loss are significant, he is extremely grateful for the swift response and commendable efforts of the Guyana Fire Service in containing the blaze.

The church was able to move ahead this morning with its Sunday service.
